I was particularly struck by an article I recently found in “il Post”: In Fabriano, they no longer produce photocopy paper . Who among us hasn’t, at least once, used an A4 ream of Fabriano paper? What news! This is yet another step toward a digital society, devoid of the emotional and sensorial connection to books and paper materials , increasingly less inclined to contact with the object or person.

The “first” version of the Internet, the one that captured my personal interest, was characterized above all by the possibility of intervening, of “posting”, of exposing oneself publicly. This great space for participation, this agora, seemed to us — or rather, seemed to me — the right key to involving everyone, an alternative to the “usual” media protagonists.
The Internet of today, only a few years later, is significantly different, not only because social media users have failed to understand its potential, ways of use and consequences, but rather because of the stratospheric increase in the information being published and therefore in entropy.

The debate over university students’ use of A.I. tools suddenly flared up after 82 students were suspended in Sweden. Once again, instead of examining and interpreting this new generation of services in depth, opposing football-style camps have formed on the Internet and in traditional media, for and against. I do not know the case of the 82 Swedish students in detail, so I cannot judge it or discuss its merits, but I can point you toward what A.I. really is and the impact these services are having on our society today.

I started writing a critical article capable of highlighting the social consequences of the spread of A.I., then I thought about having ChatGPT write the same article. I specified the topics, the length, how to structure the paragraphs, when to use bullet lists, … I left complete freedom over the title and the content to present.

Socializing, communicating, gathering, being part of a circle, of a community. Until a few years ago, socializing, “being social”, necessarily implied opening up to other individuals in the real world. A person skilled at socializing was, predominantly, if not exclusively, capable of carrying out tangible actions aimed at contact and communication, face to face, in the real world.

I keep reading articles about artificial intelligence; A.I. is undoubtedly the topic of the day. Two hypotheses attract the most attention: the possibility that intelligent software may overpower the human species, and the possible loss of jobs for thousands of people. While acknowledging that both scenarios could become reality, my aim in this article is to move away from a dystopian future and bring the debate back to concrete, less catastrophic perspectives.
